Five Acres Breaks Ground For Research and Training Center |
Ground has been broken on the long-awaited Research & Training Center at Five Acres child and family service agency in Altadena, Calif.
The building will be the new home for Five Acres’ research and training staff and is scheduled for completion in summer 2009.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held November 19, 2008 at the site with approximately fifty guests in attendance comprised of Five Acres board members, the buildings and grounds committee, local supporters and friends of the agency. The craftsman-style design of the 2,600-square-foot building and extensive landscaping are intended to mirror homes in the residential neighborhood where Five Acres has been located since 1926. The single-story building will feature open office space, private offices, basement storage area and have an adjacent parking area in the rear.
“This is the culmination of a long-term dream to provide vital space for our research and training staff,” said Bob Ketch, executive director of Five Acres. “They will now have a comfortable and efficient environment in which to carry out their important work on behalf of the children and families we serve.”
Building costs were reduced by in-kind gifts of steel, dry wall, roofing, fencing and trellises from Five Acres supporters.
PBWS Architects, Pasadena, designed the center. Klein Construction Group, Inc. is the general contractor.
Founded in 1888, Five Acres is a child and family services agency providing therapeutic prevention, treatment and education programs to strengthen families and prevent child abuse. Services include residential care and education, mental health services in homes and schools, foster care and adoptions and domestic violence prevention. The agency serves more than 5,000 children in Southern California annually.

Macy's to Reopen Lake Avenue Store in Pasadena |
Macy’s reopening of the Lake Avenue, Pasadena store took place on Saturday, November 22, 2008. The Lake Avenue location had been closed since early May 2008 for seismic work, as well as renovation of the interior spaces. Customers saw new locations for some departments, as well as updates flooring, lighting, and fixturing. New vendors also were showcased when the store reopened.
The remodeled Macy’s maintained its original footprint, but saw some areas recaptured from stock space, including returning some original features to the sales floor. Two original fireplaces that were paneled over, one in Men’s and one in Women’s apparel, were restored and visible. On the middle level, recaptured stock space reverted to selling space, in a treatment that will recall the original design of the Fur Salon, with a window to the exterior and an alcove for dressing rooms. The shoe salon relocated to the lower level where it doubled in size.
“This renovation has allowed Macy’s to recapture some of the charming aspects of retailing from years gone by, while still offering the customer a thoroughly modern shopping environment,” stated Del Hernandez, Macy’s Vice President and Pasadena Store Manager. “We are excited to welcome the Pasadena community back to Pasadena’s original department store.”
Macy’s partnered with the City of Pasadena and Pasadena Heritage throughout the construction process. “Maintaining the architectural integrity of the building has been of primary importance,” said Ramsay Weatherford, Operating Vice President, Store Planning, Macy’s Inc., based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Macy’s celebrated the Grand Reopening with a Community Shopping Day on Saturday, November 22. More than 55 charities had signed up to sell $10 tickets that offer substantial store discounts. The day featured a variety of activities including fashion shows, special guests, entertainment, and more. On Friday, November 21, Macy’s held a private reception for charge card holders, including a 4pm ribbon cutting ceremony. Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard joined Jeff Gennette, Chairman and CEO of Macy’s West, along with Sue Mossman, Executive Director of Pasadena Heritage, the Tournament of Roses Queen and Court and Liz Rusnak Arizmendi were at the ribbon cutting festivities. Representing the old Macy's were two vintage cars, a 1945 Cadillac, and a 1948 Woody. Representing the new Macy's, Rusnak Jaguar displayed a 2009 Jaguar XF and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Pasadena showcased a 2009 Phantom.
The historic Macy’s building was originally opened in 1947, designed by Wurdeman & Becket architecture firm, a Los Angeles-based firm whose credits include the Capital Records building and Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Downtown Los Angeles. Opening as Bullock’s, the store was featured in an 8-page spread in Architectural Digest in 1948, and was seen as the most modern version of a suburban department store.

Distinguished Speaker Series |
On Wednesday, January 21st, Distinguished Speakers Series of Southern California will present John Bolton. The Wall Street Journal described him as a man who “saw the world as it really was” and spoke “with moral clarity about it,” With no-holds-barred candor, this veteran of three Republican administrations, provides a thought-provoking perspective on international affairs. During his United Nations tenure, no matter what the security challenge—preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, pushing Syria out of Lebanon or successfully pressing for sanctions against North Korea's nuclear tests— Bolton remained stalwart in his defense of the economic and security interests of the U.S.
He consistently projected unwavering support for Israel. This advocate for human rights engineered the Security Council’s approval of 22,500 U.N. peacekeepers in Darfur. From
The Rusnak Mailbox |
Numerous
letters of gratitude were received this month. Here are a couple
we would like to share with you.
We start off this month’s mail with a wonderful letter to Michael Bradford, General Manager, Rusnak Audi Pasadena:
Hello Mr. Bradford,
I am writing to compliment on your Audi showroom, especially the manager-in-charge, Ephrem Yohannes. My husband and I visited the showroom last week. We were politely greeted by all the staff. We test drove the A6, then Ephrem went out of the way to bring in a Quattro for us to try just to feel the difference. He displayed a high level of knowledge and professionalism. Beyond that, it was his sincerity that was truly distinctive. We never felt being pushed towards a deal, instead we feel that he was genuinely looking out for our best interest as well. What a difference from our other car dealership experiences! Even though we are still in the process of finalizing our decision, I wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our visit to the showroom and will make sure to spread the good word to our friends and family.
Regards,
Vanessa Choy
Pasadena
Greetings!
Thanks for your letter regarding the purchase of the 2003 BMW 745. It will be my son who will be using it.
Please share my appreciation to your wonderful personnel for their kindness. My family was glad the way Keith Benjamin dealt with us and Arsenio Guevara (Sales Manager). Their friendly salesmanship, not pressure-type, helped in closing the sale.
Keep up the good work.
Blessings,
Elizer Sacay
